In the Town of Petawawa, pet licence fees and donations are an important source for funding essential animal services. When you license your pet, know that you are doing your part to help your local shelter workers care for lost, injured and abused animals.

We are proud to call the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre an official Safe & Happy Partner. We will always donate 20% of every designer tag sale to the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre in an effort to provide additional funding for the community’s vulnerable animals and the staff that serves them. We spoke with Kate Graham, Interim Animal Centre Manager about what’s been going on at the Ontario SPCA Renfrew County Animal Centre.

What is something you are really proud of as an organization? We are very proud of our networking and collaboration capabilities. We work very hard to grow and develop these relationships. Through collaboration with donors, volunteers, businesses, and other rescue organizations we are ultimately able to help more animals in need.

What is something that makes your shelter unique? Our high adoption rate for a wide variety of species, sizes, ages and personalities of animals.

What is a program that you run that is really important for people to know about? Our animal care team tailors a unique care plan for every animal that comes into our animal centre. Not only do we ensure a pet’s physical needs are met, but we also focus on their mental and emotional needs. Thanks to our Registered Veterinary Technician and care team, our enrichment program is top-notch and results in healthier, happier pets!

The Ontario Humane Society has a free online tool for shelter professionals and pet owners to improve the behavioural health of animals. The Environmental Needs & Behavioral Health section on shelterhealthpro.com includes professional tips and tools on training and behaviours, enrichment, socialization activities, and strategies to reduce stress in animals. We incorporate ideas and valuable strategies from this website on a daily basis at our centre.

Can you share a story of a specific pet you helped recently? Gem started her journey with us as a cat who arrived as a pregnant stray. In the loving and caring environment that one of our amazing foster homes provided, she gave birth to a beautiful litter of kittens. After raising her little furry family and the centre staff finding homes for them all, it was her turn to be in the spotlight. She has now found the perfect human companion to share her adventures with.

Do you have any specific advice for pet owners that you’d like to share? Aside from registering your pet with your Township, microchipping is an amazing way of ensuring they always have the best chance at getting back to you safely should they ever be lost. Both cats and dogs can be microchipped and often this is a service that can be paired with any regular vet visit. Once you do have one implanted remember to update your contact information with the microchip company if you do happen to change your phone number, or home address.
